Nebraska women pull away from Coastal Carolina in second half

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Nebraska women hit nine 3-pointers after halftime, shaking off a cold start to knock off Coastal Carolina 55-47 during the final day of the San Juan Shootout on Friday afternoon.

Nebraska, which lost 82-72 to Buffalo on Thursday, trailed 22-19 at halftime after going 2 of 13 from behind the arc.

But NU senior Emily Wood opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, and after the teams traded baskets, Taylor Kissinger hit back-to-back 3s to give the Huskers (4-2) the lead for good at 30-27 with 6:43 left in the third quarter.

Coastal Carolina (3-3) closed to 33-32 before Wood, who entered Friday averaging 4.2 points per game, hit another 3 with 1:53 left in the third. Her third trey of the quarter came with 40 seconds left to put NU up 41-34.

Wood scored all nine of her points in the third quarter, which tied her career high. She also added four assists, three rebounds and a key steal to help Nebraska end a 19-game losing streak away from Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Kissinger, a freshman from Minden, kept the Huskers in front by hitting two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. All of her team-high 15 points came on 3s as she finished 5 of 12 from behind the arc.

Hannah Whitish added a 3 with 7:10 left to put the Huskers up 49-39, but Coastal Carolina stayed within striking distance.

It was 52-47 when Nicea Eliely hit another 3-pointer with 1:05 left to secure the win. Eliely finished with nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

Nebraska, which went 9 of 15 from behind the arc in the second half, shot 42 percent from the field. That mark helped overcome the Huskers taking four free throws and committing 21 turnovers.

Nebraska’s defense held Coastal Carolina to 35.2 percent shooting for the game. The Chanticleers went 3 of 13 from the field in the fourth quarter.

Jas Adams kept Coastal Carolina close with 28 points, six steals and five rebounds — she took 27 of her team’s 54 shots. DJ Williams was the only other Chanticleer to finish in double figures, scoring 11 off the bench.

Nebraska will return home to take on Clemson in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at 7 p.m. Thursday.
