Nebraska softball shuts out Indiana to give Hoosiers first Big Ten loss

Bloomington, Ind. — One big offensive inning and a complete game from senior ace Kaylan Jablonski powered Nebraska to a 5-0 Big Ten softball victory over Indiana.

The Hoosiers (13-22) entered Friday’s game at Andy Mohr Field leading the Big Ten standings with a 6-0 record but took their first conference setback thanks to a two-hitter by Jablonski. The senior from Omaha Skutt allowed two singles, struck out six and walked two while improving her record to 18-7.

After leaving the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings, the Nebraska offense finally broke through in the fifth inning.

Left fielder Gina Metzler got things started for the Huskers (26-12, 4-3 Big Ten) with a leadoff double down the left field line, followed by a walk to Alyvia Simmons.

Third baseman Lexey Kneib put down a sacrifice bunt and reached first base on a throwing error . Metzler scored on the play to put the Huskers ahead 1-0, while Simmons and Kneib both advanced one base.

Laura Barrow drew a walk to load the bases for Tristen Edwards, who coaxed another walk from losing pitcher Tara Trainer to bring home Simmons and put the Huskers ahead 2-0. Edwards finished the day 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Jablonski then stepped up and ripped a double to center field that brought home Kneib and Barrow for a 4-0 lead. Jablonski extended her hitting streak to seven games. First baseman Madi Unzicker followed with a single up the middle to bring home Edwards with the final run.

The loss snapped Indiana’s seven-game winning streak. The Hoosiers had just two baserunners reach second base.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled to begin Saturday at noon.
