Huskers fall to another ranked foe

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — Washington scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 7-5 win over Nebraska on Saturday.

With the loss, the Huskers finished a winless weekend in the Puerto Vallarta College Classic, going 0-4.

The Huskers played three top-15 opponents in the tournament, including No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Auburn a day earlier.

Nebraska started strong with a three-run first inning led by RBI singles from MJ Knighten and Alvia Simmons.

But the Huskies (2-1) answered with a two-run home run by Julia DePonte off Kaylan Jablonski (0-2) and a two-run triple from Sis Bates to take a 4-3 lead.

Washington starter Taran Alvelo settled in after her shaky first inning, limiting the Huskers to one hit and two runs over the next five innings.

Trailing 7-3, the Huskers picked up a pair of runs with two outs in the seventh, including an RBI double by Jablonski.

But with the potential tying run at the plate, Austen Urness grounded out to end the game.

Jablonski gave up 11 hits and seven runs in seven innings, striking out two.

Nebraska will travel next to Tallahassee, Florida, for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Huskers will face Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. on Friday.
