Comeback bid by Nebraska women’s basketball falls short at Iowa

IOWA CITY — Hannah Whitish’s 3-pointer from the left side fell short as time expired, and Iowa held on to beat Nebraska 75-72 Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by 12 with 1:29 remaining, the Huskers (4-10, 0-2) clawed back into the game as Iowa missed six free throws in the final minute.

Jessica Shepard scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Nebraska, with Whitish adding 14 points and four assists. Whitish hit three 3s.

An Allie Havers layup with nine seconds left cut Iowa’s lead to 75-72. The Huskers immediately fouled Chase Coley, who then missed a pair of free throws.

Jasmine Cincore grabbed the rebound, leading to a fast-break opportunity, but NU missed the game-tying shot. Megan Gustafson had 22 points and nine rebounds while Ally Disterhoft scored 16 for Iowa.

The Huskers return home to Pinnacle Bank Arena, hosting Maryland at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
