DAYKIN – Tristan Dirks scored early and often Friday to help the Sterling football team blow out Meridian 52-6.
The speedy sophomore scored the first points of the game on a 37-yard run on Sterling’s first possession then the Jets recovered a fumble to set up a Ben Hier 22-yard score to make it 14-0 early.
Sterling never looked back with Dirks scoring two more times to extend the lead and a second touchdown by Hier to make it 36-0 late in the second quarter. Meridian finally got on the board with a 30-yard touchdown run from Baxter Beals, but Dirks scored again before the half.
Sterling finished the game with 423 rushing yards. Dirks led the way with 171 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries. Hier added eight runs for 129 yards and two scores.
The win gives Sterling their first victory of the season to improve to 1-3. They’ll face a tough task next week at home against BDS. Meridian falls to 1-3 and will travel to Falls City next week to face Sacred Heart.
