CRETE – Lincoln Pius X showed why its baseball team is rated number one in the state Tuesday with a 13-1 victory over Crete in five innings.
Derek Kolbush pitched three scoreless innings for the Thunderbolts, allowing just one hit. Meanwhile the Pius bats scored early and often with five in the first inning and three in the second to take a 10-0 lead.
Crete got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles by Spencer Steinhoff and Blake Feeken. A groundout by Trevor Nickel advanced the runners to second and third, then Steinhoff scored on a wild pitch for the lone run of the game. Pius then scored three more in the top of the fifth to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.
The Cardinals had just two other hits in the game, both from Nigel Brooks, who had a double in the first and a single in the fifth. Garrett Skillett also reached base twice after being hit by a pitch in the third and drawing a walk in the fifth.
Pius is now 13-1 on the season and hosts Papillion LaVista on Wednesday. Crete drops to 3-7 and will try to snap their losing streak Thursday when they visit Thurston-Cuming County.
