A 23-year-old Lincoln man was killed in a four-vehicle crash in Lincoln on Friday as rain and ice fell across the capital city.
The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near Lyncrest Drive and O Street, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, just south of Gateway Mall.
Jared J. Williams was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
Lincoln Police Capt. Robert Farber said witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored Mercedes sedan going west on O Street at an “excessive” speed.
As the Mercedes approached the intersection, the car began to fishtail, and then spun as it entered the intersection, witnesses told police.
The Mercedes crashed into two vehicles waiting to turn north into the mall from the eastbound turn lane: a Honda CRV and a GMC sport utility vehicle. The impact of the crash caused the GMC to strike a Subaru Forester behind it, Farber said.
Williams was a passenger in the Mercedes, which contained three people.
At least two occupants of the GMC took themselves to a hospital, Farber said. None of the other injuries were thought to be life-threatening, he said.
The crash shut down O Street in both directions from 56th to 66th Streets for several hours.
The cause of the crash was under investigation Friday.
