NORRIS – The Johnson-Brock volleyball team claimed the D1-1 district championship Thursday by beating Meridian in three sets, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24.
The Eagle jumped out to fast starts in each set and took advantage an uncharacteristic number of errors by Meridian in the battle of the top two teams in Class D1.
Meridian battled back from the brink of elimination in the third set behind three straight ace serves by Erin Johnson as well as a trio of aces for Halle Pribyl and one each for Hailey Schafer and Josiee Sobotka all in the third set. But Johnson-Brock was too much as Fallon Sutheit put down a block to end the match.
Stutheit led all players with 18 kills along with two aces and seven blocks. Pribyl had seven kills and three aces for the Mustangs and Rylee Pieper added seven kills of her own.
Meridian and Johnson-Brock will be the top two seeds for the Class D1 state tournament next week in Lincoln. Brackets for the tournament are expected to be released Saturday night.
