HASTINGS – After a slow start in Monday’s District Finals vs. Malcolm, the Fairbury Jeffs made sure to take control right from the first at-bat in today’s state tournament.

“It was very important, especially playing a team we’ve played now for the third time, and we always battle,” said Head Coach Taylor Biehl.

The Jeffs scored six runs in the first two innings, headlined by a leadoff homerun by Cora DeBoer in the first inning. She finished 4-4 with two doubles, as well.

Marah Shumard and Sarah McCown also added three hits and two RBIs.

They scored at least three runs in every inning except the third, including a four run fifth to run rule Panthers.

Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan was led by Alexis Schmidt. The Senior hit a three run home run in the fifth to keep the Panthers alive.

The #2 Jeffs advance to Play #3 Bishop Neumann. The Cavaliers topped Auburn 13-7 in their opener. They will play at 4:30 today, live on Ol Red 99-5.

Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan drops into the loser’s bracket, where they will play Auburn at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
