FREMONT – A disappointing season for the Doane football team ended Saturday with a 31-20 loss on the road at Midland.
Just about everything that could go wrong for the Tigers did as Midland scored late in the first quarter after a long punt return set up a two yard touchdown run by quarterback Peyton Nelson and the Warriors ran a fake kick for a two point conversion to make it 8-0.
Midland got two more points early in the second quarter when Taylor Syvertsen blocked a Doane punt out the back of the end zone for a safety. Then near the end of the first half Doane quarterback Trev Lovell fumbled on a sack and Midland recovered for a touchdown to make it 17-0 heading into halftime.
The Tigers showed some life in the second half when Jack Shadley hit Jacob Cornelius for an 86-yard touchdown pass to get on the scoreboard, but Midland answered quickly and never looked back.
Shadley finished with 251 pass yards and two touchdowns. Corneilus had five catches for 126 yards and a score. Drew Klein was Doane’s leading rusher with 90 yards and also had six receptions for 92 yards. Brody Azbill had two interceptions for the Tiger defense.
Doane ends the season with a 5-5 record.
