BEATRICE – The Beatrice Orangemen got everything they could handle from the Crete Cardinals on Friday night, but they held on and came out on top 31-21.
The win helps them improve to 7-1 overall. Norris also won on Friday night against Waverly to improve to 6-2, meaning next week’s game at Beatrice will be for the Class B-4 District Championship.
Against Crete, Cooper Blum opened the scoring right before the end of the first quarter with a quarterback sneak touchdown from one yard out. The opposite quarterback would respond with the Crete offense, though, as Rhett Harms ran 56 yards to tie it at 7.
Blum led the Oranamen attack right before the end of the first half and hit Will Crandall for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Beatrice would lead 14-7 at halftime.
Ethan Sherman had a one yard touchdown in the third quarter, which tied the game at 14, and that’s how it remained going into the final quarter of play.
Will Crandall scored his second touchdown of the game, this time on the ground, on the first play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter.
After a stand defensively, Dalton Hartig returned a punt 54 yards to the Crete 19 yard line. That set up a Jacob Pinkerton 19 yard rushing touchdown on the next play, increasing the lead to 28-14.
The Orangemen finished off Crete with a district road victory, 31-21.
The big difference between the two teams was four Crete turnovers, compared to one from Beatrice.
