A Touch of Brass Performs at Wayne State College

Local brass quintet, A Touch of Brass, presents a compilation of spirituals Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. in Ley Theatre on the Wayne State College Campus. This performance provides copious servings of rhythm, harmony, and inspiration. Selections include Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; the Bach arrangement of My Spirit Be Joyful; a mariachi setting of Put Your Hand in the Hand; and a Canadian Brass version of Just a Closer Walk. A Touch of Brass has entertained audiences in Northeast Nebraska and surrounding communities for more than 30 years. This concert is free and open to the public. Dr. Angela Miller-Niles, professor of piano at Wayne State College, performs music from the Romantic period Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Ley Theatre. Miller-Niles is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Grunin, adjunct professor of strings, playing cello on Sergei Rachmaninoff’s passionate Sonata for cello and piano. Piano only repertoire includes Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade no. 1 in g minor and Franz Schubert’s Impromptu in G-flat major. This concert is free and open to the public. An Evening of Choirs concert showcases an eclectic musical mix Monday, Feb. 25 in Ley Theatre on the Wayne State College campus. The 7:30 p.m. concert features the WSC Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, and Madrigal Singers. Repertoire embraces musical contributions by modern female composers, a Gospel arrangement of City Called Heaven, Irving Berlin’s jazzy Blue Skies, and Give Us Hope, inspired by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King. The Wayne State College Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble showcases musical adventure Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Ramsey Theatre. Dr. Josh Calkin conducts the Symphonic Band and Dr. David Bohnert conducts the Wind Ensemble. The concert is free and open to the public. Celebrate the prose and poetry of Great Plains writers during the Plains Writers Series Thursday, Feb. 28 at Wayne State College. Readings take place at 1 and 2 p.m. in the Humanities lounge. Features authors include Ruth Williams, Assistant Professor of English at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO; Heidi Hermanson of Omaha; and Todd Robinson and Miles Waggener, faculty at University of Nebraska at Omaha. Author readings are followed by Poetry Slam 41 at 7 p.m. at the Max Bar and Grill in downtown Wayne. Registration starts at 6 p.m. Participants need four original poems and $5 for register. Kindergarten Round-Up will be held on Monday, March 4, 2019.  Students with last names beginning with A-K are asked to attend starting at 8:15 a.m.  For those with last names beginning with L-Z, Round-Up will begin at 10:30 a.m.  Parents are asked to attend the Round-Up with their child.  If you have not received a letter from the Elementary School, and have a child who will be entering kindergarten in the fall, please call 375-3854 or 375-2230 for further information.
